Showtune Sunday: A trio of bitchy Bea Arthur duets
While Angela Lansbury was tragically passed over for the lead in the movie version of Mame (she was a smash on Broadway and won the Tony), her co-star Bea Arthur did get to recreate her Tony winning performance on film opposite Lucille Ball.
While Lucy was not much of a singer, their duet of Bosom Buddies worked well on film. Compare that to her performance with Lansbury at a much later Tony Awards.
And just for kicks, I’ve put a fun clip of Miss Arthur with the equally bitchy Madame.
Enjoy!

2201 East says:
To say it mildly, Mame with Lucille Ball was something short of a disaster. Rosalind Russell who played the part originally felt the one person in Hollywood that had what it took to play the part right was of all people…the young Cher. Angela Lansbury did a great job. Still I think nobody could touch Miss Russell for bringing to life a very hare brained lady you could love.
