Showtune Sunday: A montage of legends from Lansbury to LuPone singing “Some People” from “Gypsy!
Absolutely love this video! What a treasure! It is a compilation of some of the greatest divas – ever – performing the show-stopper Some People from Gypsy.
Included are the Broadway Mama Rose’s Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone plus the TV movie Mama Rose Bette Midler.
And then there is Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli,Linda Lavin, Betty Buckley (Wow!).
In case you are wondering why Rosalind Russell, Mama Rose in the feature film version, isn’t in the compilation, check out the second video. It’s the great Miss Russell giving the song a go in her own voice.
It’s a good thing she was dubbed. Wonderful actress, but not a good singer.
