Showtime Sunday: Tribute to Eydie Gorme …

Had dinner last night at Bossa Nova restaurant in West Hollywood and when I got home, found out that Eydie Gorme had died.

Her biggest hit? Blame it on the Bossa Nova.

Miss Gorme was 84 and her husband, Steve Lawrence, was by her side.

He said in a statement: “Eydie has been my partner on stage and in life for more than 55 years. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and even more the first time I heard her sing. While my personal loss is unimaginable, the world has lost one of the greatest pop vocalists of all time.”

She and Lawrence met while both were regular performers on The Tonight Show hosted by Steve Allen. They married in 1957.

They became a well-known duo but in addition to Blame It On the Bossa Nova, Miss Gorme also had a huge solo hit with the Spanish-language Amor recorded with the Mexican combo Trio Los Panchos.

Here are some memories of Eydie:

3 Remarks

  1. Eydie’s version of “What Did I Have That I Don’t Have” is one outstanding song sung perfectly. Fond farewell to Eydie who had, in my opinion, one of the best voices ever.

  2. We were blessed to have enjoyed her talents all these years.

Sra. Eydie Gorme sung beautiful music in spanish. As a brown child, I would listen to my Mom sing to her albums and my Dad would sing the male parts. Every time I play her music, which is often, I can still smell the onion and garlic caramelizing and getting ready for the spanish rice “heaven”. Vaya con Dios Sra. Gorme. Thank you for your legacy.
