Serena Williams wins Wimbledon!

Wimbledon Champ: Saturday marked the first time Serena Williams didn’t have to break her sister Venus’s heart to win a Wimbledon singles title and that is clearly why she looked more overjoyed than ever as she lifted the winner’s plate over her head.

It is the fourth singles win at Wimbledon for Serena who in her three previous finals had defeated Venus Williams, herself a five-time champion.

A Williams sister has now won the title at Wimbledon in nine out of the last 11 years.

“I’m just glad that I was able to win, especially (after) Venus lost,” Serena said after the match. “I really wanted a Williams sister to go ahead and win it. Eleven years consistent is really cool.”

Serena easily beat Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-2 and in doing so, surpassed the great Billie Jean King on the all-time list of grand slam singles crowns. Serena now has 13 but would have to win five more to tie the 18 won by both Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. Helen Wills Moody had 19, Steffi Graf won 22 while the record holder is Margaret Court with 24.

“Hey, Billie—I got you,” Serena said to King who watched the match from the Royal Box. “This is No. 13 for me now. It’s just amazing to able to be among such great people.”

Later, King told reporters that Serena “can be the greatest ever if she keeps going.”

Martina thinks so too: “At the rate she’s going, she certainly may catch me and Chris and Helen Wills Moody and who knows, maybe even Steffi. She’s just head and shoulders above everybody else, and those are pretty broad shoulders she’s got.”

My favorite moment came after the match and the post-match interviews when Serena entered the tennis club and did a little twirl with the trophy: “I was really feeling Frank Sinatra-ish, `Come Fly With Me, Fly Me To The Moon.’ … That’s what I felt like at the moment.”
