Serena Williams wins the French Open!
By beating Maria Sharapova earlier today to win her second French Open title and first since 2003, Serena Williams solidified her place among the all-time greats of tennis.
“Eleven years,” Williams said in French during the trophy ceremony. “I think it’s unbelievable. Now I have 16 Grand Slam titles. It’s difficult for me to speak because I’m so excited.”
If she can add Wimbledon and the US Open crowns this year, she will tie Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova on the all-time list of most slam singles titles with 18.
Steffi Graf won 22 slams, Margaret Court 24.
Last year in Paris, Serena crashed out in the first round. But since then, she has lost only three matches, regained the number one ranking, and is currently riding a career best 31 match winning streak.
At 31 years and 247 days, she is oldest woman in the Open Era to win the French Open title, the previous mark held by Evert since 1986.
Williams, who has a home in Paris, is already thinking about winning again next year.
“I love Paris,” she said. “I spend a lot of time here. I live here. I practice here. I think I am a Parisian.”
