See Tyne Daly in character for “Master Class”
Sure, Tyne Daly has had one of the most successful television careers of any actress with six Emmy wins for her three series: Cagney & Lacey, Judging Amy and Christy.
But she’s no slouch on the Broadway stage either with a Tony Award for her performance as Mama Rose in the 1989 revival of Gypsy and was nominated for her performance in the play Rabbit Hole.
Now Miss Daly is set to return to Broadway yet again in a revival of the play Master Class about opera legend Maria Callas. Zoe Caldwell won the Tony for her performance in the original production in the mid-90s. She was replaced by Patti LuPone in 1996. I happened to be in New York at that time for the US Open and seeing Miss LuPone in the role was my first Broadway show – ever – and it was a thrill.
Miss Daly is trimmer than she’s been in years and has really made a physical transformation for this role. My guess is Tony voters will take notice.
The play began previews at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater on June 14. It officially opens on July 7.
