See Thomas Roberts’ powerful and moving speech at GLAAD Media Awards in New York City
Couldn’t be in New York City for last night’s GLAAD Media Awards but these videos from the event gibe you a good feel for what went on at the Waldorf Astoria.
How cool to have Lynda Carter presenting to Thomas Roberts and said of the MSNBC anchor: “Throughout his career he has been an uncompromising voice for acceptance – pure and simple – using his platform to bring attention to LGBTv stories that would otherwise be overlooked or ignored.”
“I am so humbled and honored to be associated with Vito Russo – the name means vision, it means fortitude, it means not being intimidated – and Vito means respect. Vito Russo is a superhero and an icon for the LGBT community.’
“While my wedding remains my best night ever, this is definitely a close second.’
Thomas’s speech is wonderful – no two ways about it. He speaks so well, provides history and speaks from his heart.
He can barely keep from breaking down when he tells he crowd about when he was 15 and felt like he was less than because he knew that he was gay. He attempted to end his life but he was saved by his sister.
‘As a kid and a young man the words sissy, gay, faggot and queer cut me to the bone because I was all of those things and none of those things. … We’ve certainly come a long way from where we began but boy do we still have a long way to go.’
