See LGBT-themed Chevrolet ads that aired during NBC’s telecast of Olympics opening ceremony in Sochi

The Russian government may be busy cracking down on any public display of support of homosexuality as the Olympics kick off in Sochi, but it has no control over what airs on NBC.

The US broadcaster of the 2014 Winter Olympics aired two commercials from car company Chevrolet that could never air in Russia due to its anti-gay propaganda law.

They featured families with same-sex couples and aired during NBC’s tape-delayed telecast of opening ceremonies on Friday.

‘While what it means to be a family hasn’t changed, what a family looks like does,’ says the narrator in a spot for Chevrolet’s Traverse.

As video images of gay and straight families fill the screen, the narrator says the car is ‘for whatever shape your family takes.’

The second ad, which doesn’t focus on a single make of car, includes the line as ‘like the old love, the new love starts with a kiss’ as it shows two men getting married.

‘Like the old us,’ the narrator says, ‘the new us is built on the things that matter most.’

LGBTI media watchdog organization GLAAD is impressed with the commercials.

‘Chevrolet has nailed it with ads that truly reflect the fabric of our nation, which today includes gay and lesbian families,’ GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement.

Referencing an ad that aired earlier in the week during the Super Bowl Ellis said: ‘Recent LGBT-inclusive ads like these not only raise the bar for the advertising industry, but also reflect the growing support and acceptance of LGBT people.’

She added: ‘It’s about time my children were able to turn on the television and see families like their own represented in mainstream advertising.’
