Actress Mary Tyler Moore attends the 12th annual Broadway Barks! in Shubert Alley on July 10, 2010 in New York City. At 74 years old Mary may not be a spring chicken but she sure still has that pep in her step when it comes to helping animals. Fame Pictures, Inc
Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters aren’t just a couple of showbiz legends who allowed their names to be used for Broadway Barks, an annual dog and cat adoption event that benefits New York City animal shelters and adoption agencies.
They are well-known animal lovers and have been the best of friends since they met during the filming of The Last Best Year, an outstanding and deeply moving 1990 television film in which both actresses delivered what are among the finest dramatic performances of their stellar career.
I’ve never forgotten the movie because I burst out crying while watching it. Bernadette plays a lonely woman dying of cancer and all she wants to do is meet the son she gave up for adoption before she dies. Mary played a psychologist helping her who can no longer keep the personal and professional boundaries.
