Sam Smith dominates Grammys with four wins: ‘Thank you all for the best night of my life’

Sam Smith took home both the Record of the Year and Song of the Year prizes for his song Stay With Me at the Grammy Awards tonight.

The openly gay singer also won for Best Pop Vocal Album for In the Lonely Hour and was voted Best New Artist. Overall, he won in four of the six categories he was nominated in – more than any other artist this year.

‘Thank you all for the best night of my life,’ he told the star-studded crowd at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

‘Before I made this record I was doing everything to try and get my music heard,’ Smith added. ‘I tried to lose weight and I was making awful music. It was only until I started to be myself that the music started to flow and people started to listen.’

Smith took to the stage to do more than accept awards. He also performed a duet of Stay With Me with Mary J. Blige (see video below).

Smith lost the Album of the Year Grammy to Beck who won for Morning Phase and also lost for Best Pop Solo Performance to Pharrell Williams who won for Happy (Live).
