SAG Award nominations for “The Imitation Game,” “The Normal Heart” and “OITNB”

I’ve got to leave for a movie premiere shortly but just realized if I don’t post about today’s Screen Actors Guild nominations now, they will get lost in the hubbub over tomorrow morning’s Golden Globe Award nominations.

Don’t remember them ever being so close together before but hey, I’m sure the actors who get nods won’t mind waking up early two days in a row to deal with it all.

I’m going to highlight the LGBT-related nominations because, well, that’s how I roll.

The outstanding Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game picked up three well deserved SAG nominations which bodes well for its already outstanding Oscar prospects.

Benedict Cumberbatch was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor for his performance as Turing and co-star Keira Knightly earned a supporting actress nod for her work as Joan Clarke in the film.

In what is SAG’s equivalent of a best picture award, The Imitation Game also earned a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

The other nominations of LGBT interest were on the television side.

The HBO film The Normal Heart earned a nomination in the TV movie or miniseries acting categories for Mark Ruffalo and Julia Roberts who also served as producers on the long-awaited screen version of the AIDS drama.

Openly gay actor Jim Parsons was nominated for Outstanding Performance By a Male Actor in a Comedy Series for The Big Bang Theory and his competition includes Eric Stonestreet who plays a gay character on Modern Family.

Trans actress Laverne Cox was nominated in the supporting actress in a comedy category for Orange is the New Black while her co-star, Uzo Aduba, got a lead actress nod for her role as a lesbian named Suzanne ‘Crazy Eyes’ Warren.

The show’s cast was nominated in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series category.

Also competing in the comedy ensemble category are Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Modern Family which also have gay characters.

Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany scored a nomination in Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series. She portrays several clones on the show including bisexual scientist and a transgender man.

The SAG Awards will be presented on January 25 in Los Angeles.
