Ryan Murphy says anti-gay group One Million Moms will see themselves in NBC’s “The New Normal”

I’m at the TV Critics Association Summer Press Tour in Beverly Hills this week and today was NBC day.

I’ll have several posts in the coming days about the NBC sitcom The New Normal about a blended family created by a gay couple and the surrogate mother having their baby.

Executive producer Ryan Murphy addressed the protest against the show announced last week by the anti-gay group One Million Moms.

“If they watched the show – I actually think they would love it,” Murphy said. ‘Because for the first time, they’re represented. Ellen Barkin is a member of that group. Which is the truth.’

Barkin plays the bigoted mother of the surrogate mother on the show who is portrayed by Georgia King.

Before The New Normal got on its radar, One Million Moms had already this year protested Ellen DeGeneres, gay characters in comic books, rainbow Oreos, and various retail chains for gay-themed advertising.

One Million Moms said it is prepared to contact any and all sponsors of this program if it is aired.

They accuse NBC of using public airwaves ‘to continue to subject families to the decay of morals and values, and the sanctity of marriage in attempting to redefine marriage,’ according to their website.

“I think the show is funny, but I think in many ways the show is about tolerance and I think it’s about a discussion of tolerance,’ Murphy said. ‘And I think that their points of view are delivered with sensitivity and a certain amount of ferocity by Ms. Barkin, so I think they would actually, if they watched it, they would like it.’

One Remark

  1. May I suggest that all gay people also contact the advertising sponsors of this new show and show our support for the advertisers to counter-balance these bigoted “Moms,” and I use that word loosely.
