Russell Tovey waves white flag after being branded ‘the worst gay ever’ for comments about effeminate gays
Russell Tovey took to Twitter today to wave a white flag.
He caused a furor this week with his comments about effeminate gays and how his not being one has enabled him to play straight and gay roles.
Although he does have many rabid defenders, he also deeply offended many people.
He now says:
‘I surrender. You got me. I’m sat baffled and saddened that a mis-fired inarticulate quote of mine has branded me worst gay ever. If you feel I have personally let you down, I’m sorry, that was never my intention.
‘I’m proud to be who I am and proud for others We’re in this together, I want you to know whatever you think I meant, I didn’t.’
He concluded his series of tweets by saying: I’m gonna ride this out, and one day we will all look back on this moment with a half smile of fascination and amusement. Until that day I’m gonna carry on being me.’

James says:
We all say things we don’t really mean or get misinterpreted.
FAEN says:
The worst gay ever? Really? Worse than the Log Cabins? Worse than GOProud? Give me a fucking break. I understand what he meant by what he said. You had to butch it up in certain spaces or you wouldn’t have survived the mental and physical abuse. He was NOT saying effeminate gays are worse or straight acting gays are better, just giving his perspective on his life and where he grew up.
Mort says:
He meant it. This is far from the first time he’s said something like this. Good for him, he’s happy he’s a butch boy.
Mort says:
…and I bet he votes Tory too.
Brian says:
Oh please, who could be mad at Russel – just look at him!
I still love him 🙂
FAEN says:
I doubt he votes Tory.
K. Martinez says:
No, he’s not the worst gay ever. Just a putz.
Lexxvs says:
When you have a persecuted minority, whether in words or actions, it’s an inevitable effect to have those who become so vehement in their defense that they even take on those who are not vehement/educated/updated/loquacious enough OR who happen to not coincide with their particular and sometimes personal view on the defense of said minority. And occasionally this is counterproductive and provokes a backlash, as people (including those into the minority) read violence instead of the legitimate defense that is proclaimed.
I think that taking on an openly gay actor because he was not that clever at handling some words or concepts (we’ve seen what happened to Cumberbacth also, for a little misstep) is unjust and will make other gay actors to keep it to themselves as it gives the wrong impression that you have to walk on a predefined line where it is required one and only one way of thinking. And that isn’t, wasn’t and will never be the case among gays. It is easy to ask for diversity in the outside while not approving for diversity in the inside, and that applies to everybody, whether with effeminate or masculine mannerism.
Charlie says:
First of all I have no idea who this guy is. It looks like whatever roles he may have had has had to do with his body, and not his acting. I can see what he means, but this thinking is antiquated, and its bordering on bulling.
Bruce Wayne says:
Just a Big overreaction to what he said…what some people were Too Quick to Misinterpret. Typical, in this internet age, sadly.
Words and Intent are tricky things. I hold no ill will…but, if consolation is needed, I will Gladly Hold Russell!
