Roseanne on her rant against Osmond family and Mormon church: “I am so sorry for being wrong and insensitive”

http://scotsavage.files.wordpress.com/2008/06/roseannebarr.jpgI thought Roseanne Barr had lost her mind when she ripped into a grieving Marie Osmond last week regarding the suicide of her son Michael Blosil writing on her blog: “Please get some integrity and tell that church of yours that you will leave it and stop giving it ten percent of your money if they don’t stop trying to destroy your kids’ and all gay people’s civil rights and dreams and hopes.”

Whatever Roseanne’s point was, it was shocking that before this young man was even buried, she would write these things. The fallout, understandably, has been huge and now the Emmy winner has reflected on her actions and is sorry.

She writes:

”Michael’s friends and family say he was not gay. If that is true, then I owe a huge apology to the Osmond family and to Marie Osmond for the words I wrote here. I read several published sources before I said anything, but–I did not know him, and I don’t know his family either. I just reacted and said what I said because I have known so many gay mormon kids who committed suicide, as well as non mormon gay kids too. I am terribly ashamed of myself this time for shooting off my big mouth, and offending or hurting people who already were hurting. I don’t expect anyone to forgive me, but I am so sorry for being wrong and insensitive.”

”I am sorry to have hurt Marie Osmond, who is the most open minded person in her whole family…. I will leave this up for a while, and then I am just done. I appreciate the letters from gay people who thank me for speaking out on their behalf, but y’all are just going to have to take up the slack I will be leaving behind me. I am old now and tired, and not really feeling up to being the only person who says things that no one else will say. It definitely is not a good way to live my life anymore. I don’t want to end up a martyr for truth.”

If Roseanne had stopped after the first paragraph the apology would have been fine and I think acceptable to most people. Why go on in a second paragraph patting herself on the back for having spoke out. It makes no sense when she had just apologized for speaking out because she was incorrect in what she had said. Did she apologize or not? It doesn’t seem sincere to me.

  2. To a degree I respect her for at least indicating she was wrong in some respects for her outburst. The woman loses focus on what it might do to others in her jest for making her own thoughts known. Know who else does the same thing-Fred Phelps. Not good.
