Roger Federer wins in Paris – greatest ever!

He did it!

Roger Federer is the 2009 French Open champion. I’m a sleepy mess but it was worth getting at 6 a.m. to watch history. Roger defeated Robin Soderling 6-1, 7-6, 6-3 to win the Paris title for the first time in his illustrious career. The sec0nd set was close but otherwise, the outcome was never really in doubt.

After losing the Paris final three straight years to Rafael Nadal, Federer became the sixth man to win all four of the sports major grand slam titles. He also tied Peter Sampras‘ all-time record of 14 major tournament wins. Sampras never won the French tournament.

“It’s a guess the most satisfying victory of my life next to my first Wimbledon,” Federer told NBC’s John McEnroe after the match.  “For so many years I’ve been trying so hard to get this title.”

Federer won the French Opem on his 11th attempt. He’s already won 5 Wimbledons, 5 US Opens and 3 Australian Opens.
