Roger Federer on top of the world!
World number one Roger Federer won his fourth tournament since May with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Novak Djokovic in the finals of the men’s tournament in Cincinatti.
The elegant Swiss star avenged two losses to Novak earlier this season and also halted a five-match losing streak against second-ranked Andy Murray in the semifinals.
Impressive!
Just three months ago, there was talk that Federer’s days of dominating tennis were over. He’d suffered multiple losses to Rafael Nadal, Murray and Djokovic and dropped some matches to players who had no business being on the same court with King Roger.
His subpar year began to turn around at the Madrid Open in mid-May when he defeated arch-rival Nadal in the final. Next, he won the French Open for the first time in his illustrious career and a month later, won his Wimbledon for the sixth time, surpassing Pete Sampras as the male player with the most grand slam titles in history (15).
Roger took a month off to become the father of twins then returned to the tour last week where he suffered his only loss during this recent stretch in Montreal.
“I think that’s the special part, winning for the first time as a dad,” Federer said. “It’s a great thing. Gets me going emotionally a little bit, because I know it’s been a wonderful summer. Going through all of what I’ve been through and then now right away having success again, it’s a great moment in my career again.”
He heads into the US Open having won 26 of his last 27 matches and a favorite to win what would be a record-tying sixth US title.
