Roger Federer comes back from brink of defeat at Wimbledon: ‘I fought, I tried, I believed’

After losing the first two sets and saving three match points, my favorite player Roger Federer is back in the semifinals of Wimbledon for the 11th time in his unparalleled career.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion fought off Marin Cilic by rallying to win, 6-7 (4), 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (9), 6-3 in the quarterfinals earlier today.

“I remember just being in trouble the whole time,” Federer told reporters after the match. “At one point, you’re used to it. It’s not like, “Oh, my God, all of a sudden there’s a match point, all of a sudden there’s a break point to save.” It just was continuous. … But I fought, I tried, I believed.”

Federer, who turns 35 next month, is still in contention to win a record 8th Wimbledon singles crown.

He was champion in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2012 and lost the 2008, 2014 and 2015 finals.

Whether or not Federer goes on to win the title again, he has already set two additional records during this Wimbledon:

He now owns the most grand slam singles victories with 307 and tied Jimmy Connors for most Wimbledon wins (84).
