Roger Federer beats Novak Djokovic to win a record fifth title in Ohio – solidifies number one ranking

Had brunch with high school friends this morning and some of us in the group are big tennis fans.
We got on the topic of Roger Federer and all seemed to agree how lucky we all are to be able to watch his brilliance all these years.
He continued that brilliance earlier today by defeating Novak Djokovic 6-0, 7-6 in the finals of the Western & Southern Open in Mason, Ohio. It is one of the Masters 1000 tournaments on the tennis tour which means it’s a big deal. Federer won it for a record fifth time and tied Rafael Nadal for most Masters 1000 tournament titles in history with 21.
“It’s been another amazing week for me, and I’m having a magical summer,” Federer said during the trophy ceremony. “So it’s obviously very nice. And I’m excited about New York now. But I’ll first savor this one for a bit.”
Federer, who won Wimbledon for the seventh time last month and the Silver Medal at the London Olympics two weeks ago, regained the number one ranking in men’s tennis earlier this summer. The Ohio win was his sixth tournament title of the year (most of any player) and 76th overall.
This leaves Federer one shy of John McEnroe’s third-place tally of 77 singles titles. Only Jimmy Connors (109 titles) and Ivan Lendl (94 titles) have won more men’s singles titles than McEnroe and Federer in a career.
