Robbie Rogers tells Chelsea Handler he’d wear glitter if the World Cup were in Russia – and maybe a tiara
A self-assured and outspoken Robbie Rogers was a guest on Chelsea Handler’s new Netflix show a few days ago.
It’s hard to believe that it was just over three years ago that he had quit pro soccer after coming out publicly as a gay man.
But Robbie didn’t stay out of the game for long and has been a solid member of the Los Angeles Galaxy since 2013.
When Handler asked about the anti-LGBT laws in Russia, and the country’s forthcoming World Cup in 2018, Robbie said if he were on the US team he would do something like wear glitter to show the world he’s a gay athlete competing in Russia – or wear a tiara.
‘I’d make sure people knew I was gay so I could be present and people would know.’
He also said more seriously: ‘In a perfect world, it wouldn’t be in Russia – we’d boycott or move it somewhere else. But that’s never going to happen.’
Why?
Rogers says it’s because the sports governing body, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is ‘corrupt.’
‘It’s run by these old, racist, sexist, homophobic dudes that just are in charge and put their buddies in charge and there’s so much money involved. It’s pretty bad.’
