Rafael Nadal wins Wimbledon!
The dashing Spaniard Rafael Nadal won his second Wimbledon title earlier today with an impressive win over Tomas Berdych.
I’m staying with friends in Newport Beach this weekend and even after a late night, woke up at 6 a.m. to watch the match live on NBC. Sure, it wasn’t one of the classic five-setters that we’ve enjoyed the past three years (Nadal vs. Roger Federer in 2007 and 2008 and Federer vs. Andy Roddick in 2009) but it was a quality match and one that Nadal won because he seized the big moments like a true champion.
Nadal, who regained the number one wold ranking from Federer after winning the French Open last month, has now won eight grand slam singles titles (five French Opens, two Wimbledons, one Australian Open) tying greats Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi and Ivan Lendl on the all-time list.
Federer is the leader with 16 slam titles followed by Pete Sampras (14), Roy Emerson (12), Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver (11). Nadal, also winner of the Olympic Gold Medal at the 2008 Games, just turned 24 and has plenty of time to inch his way further up the all-time list.
