Putting Federer’s Wimbledon loss in perpective

Watched the fifth set of yesterday’s thrilling Wimbledon final while having a Bloody Mary at The Abbey and after Roger Federer narrowly lost to Novak Djokovic, I expressed my disappointment.

The bartender, not a follower of tennis, asked if Djokovic had won before. I said “Yes, once.”

Then he asked how many times Federer had won. I said: “Seven.”

Suddenly I felt less sad and remembered that Federer has already won more major titles than any man who has ever played.

He himself said after the match: “Winning or losing, it’s always something special and something you’ll remember, even more so when the match was as dramatic as it was today. It’s even more memorable when I see my kids there with my wife and everything. That’s what touched me the most, to be quite honest. The disappointment of the match itself went pretty quickly.”
