“Prayers for Bobby” gets Emmys nods
The extremely well-done Prayers for Bobby – which has a special screening at Outfest on Sunday – was not forgotten by Emmy voters.
Nominations were announced this morning and the film about a mother who tries to use to religious beliefs to “cure” her son of his homosexuality got several nods including one for outstanding made for television movie.
In the film, Bobby tries gamely to not be gay in order to please his mother but gradually becomes more detatched from his family. Eventually his depression leads to suicide. This results on his mother questioning her faith and she finds little help in her church.
But she finds it in the gay community.
Sigourney Weaver, first-rate as Mary Griffin, was nominated for outstanding actress in a TV movie or miniuseries. She gave, in my opinion, one of the best performances of her stellar career and will compete against Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange (Grey Gardens), Chandra Wilson in Accidental Friendship and Shirley MacLaine in Coco Channel.
If the Grey Gardens stars cancel each other out, I think Sigourney could win!
Regarding the Outfest screening: It will take place at noon on Sunday (July 19) and after the movie, there will be a panel that will include screenwriter Kate Ford, select members of the cast, executive producers Daniel Sladek, Chris Taafe and David Permut as well as PFLAG National Executive Director Jody Huckaby.
Don’t miss it!

I wish Sigourney won! My uncle was in this movie and he was really looking forward to an Emmy party for a win! haha Anyway, it’s an amazing movie and it’s a shame it didn’t win.
