Outfest Legacy Projects launches Kickstarter campaign to restore 1919 film “Different from the Others”
I’m so happy to spread the word about this project and hope some of you will contribute to the cause!
The very worthy Outfest Legacy Project, which is dedicated to restoring LGBT films for future generations, is working to restore the 1919 silent film Different From the Others.
What has been done so far was shown at the Legacy Awards a few weeks ago and it is powerful – even more so when you consider it was made more than 90 years ago.
The German film was directed by Richard Oswald and co-written by the famed psychologist who founded the German homosexual emancipation movement in 1897, Magnus Hirschfeld.
It is believed to be the only film of a group of gay-friendly movies made during Germany’s Weimar Era that escaped systematic destruction by the Nazis.
The Outfest Legacy Project says its work on this film “will ensure that the message of tolerance and acceptance that was made so courageously in 1919 in Germany will continue to inspire generations to come.”
After restoring the film, extra content will be designed to position the film as a teaching tool. Noted actors will read the film’s prologue in voiceover, there will be a new score, as well as a series of clips with experts and noted artists discussing the film’s historical significance.
The project will then partner with organizations to creat ducational kits for 35mm screenings and DVD distribution to high school and college campuses.
The fundraising goal is $5,000 and as of this posting, 16 people have pledged a total of $323. But there are 28 more days to reach the goal!
Here is a LINK to the Kickstarter page where you can see a preview of the film and see what kinds of goodies you get when you contribute.
