Outfest 2014: My chat with Michael Adam Hamilton, star of the romantic comedy “10 Year Plan”

Michael Adam Hamilton had a pleasantly persistent publicist with him on the red carpet last Thursday during opening night of Outfest.

She told me all about the movie he was in – The 10 Year Plan – and said I should talk to him.

The handsome young actor plays the character of Brody in this movie is about two best friends who make a deal that if in 10 years they are both still single, they’ll be together so they don’t have to die alone.

‘Of course, they’re not really that old and not really that desperate but they make the deal,’ Hamilton said.

He describes his character as ‘the consummate good-hearted player’ and ‘maybe a little bit above a Grindr abuser. He doesn’t want to be tied down to anyone, he doesn’t think he needs anybody and he’s the yin to the yang of his best friend who is OCD, uptight, a serial monogamist and is constantly harping on Brody.

Hamilton, who has done guest spots on such TV shows as Shameless, CSI and Desperate Housewives, is straight with a wife and three children.

He didn’t think twice about taking on a gay role.

‘This was my first gay role but I have no fear of getting pigeon-holed now. Actually the next movie I did (Baby Steps) I also play a gay character but it’s a completely different character. It’s about an interracial gay couple who decide they want to have a baby together and all the struggles they have to go through.’

He’s impressed with wealth of gay characters being written these days.

‘In The 10 Year Plan, you have a world where they don’t even discuss that they are in a gay relationship – it’s a side note. It’s about regular relationship problems that regular people have. I was happy that someone could make a romantic comedy like that.’

The 10 Year Plan screens Thursday (July 17) at Outfest at 9:30 pm in DGA 1. More info HERE.

It looks like a good one. I do wish these gay themed movies would get wider release though.
