Outfest 2011 line-up unveiled at kickoff party

photo
Outfest 2011 has a fine line-up of LGBT films on tap and I intend to see as many of them as I can! Last night was the annual kickoff party for the film festival where guests were given the official film guide for the July 7-17 event and shown a highlight reel of this year’s films.
I’m so happy that among the documentary offerings is Hollywood to Dollywood by gay twins Gary and Larry Lane. I can never tell the two apart (they are identical!) but Gary (pictured with me above) was at the party without his twin who is back at home caring for their ailing father.
I chatted with Gary at length about the film and will feature that interview in the days leading up to the festival.
photoIt was also exciting to chat up some of the people involved in the dramas August and Going Down in La La Land – films I had just watched earlier that afternoon!

La La Land’s leading man Matthew Ludwinski and I (pictured, left) chatted about the film which rests heavily on his shoulders. He is literally in every scene of this film which is uncensored look at Hollywood and some people’s desire to be loved, adored, and adulated at any cost.

The film was written and directed by Casper Andreas who was at Outfest last year with Violet Tendencies and a few years back with A Four-Letter Word.

photoAfter chatting with Matthew, I spotted out of the corner of my eye Adrian Gonzalez, one of the  handsome actors who makes up one-third of a love triangle in August.
He really is very good in this film, conveying so much with his expressive eyes.
Adrian quickly introduced me to the film writer and director Eldar Rapaport. I snapped a photo of the two then interviewed them about the movie. Of course I’ll share our chat with you a few weeks from now.
Also at the party was Michael Shoal, producer of the successful Eating Out franchise. A fourth film, Eating Out: Drama Camp, will premiere at Outfest and Michael promises lots of gorgeous guys and fun antics. Q. Alan Brocka, who directed the first Eating Out film, as returned to the helm for this fourth installment as well as a fifth film that has already been shot!
Flipping through the program, I can tell you that there are plenty of films that have caught my attention including Cho Dependent, a new Margaret Cho concert film! You know that’s going to be a scream. Wish Me Away, a documentary about country singer Chely Wright’s journey out of closet last year will be a must-see.
Two of the other documentaries I have already seen and both I can highly recommend: the first is the glorious Carol Channing: Larger Than Life and the second is the superb We Were Here, a moving chronicle of the early days of the AIDS epidemic in San Francisco.

Among the other films scheduled that have caught my eye are The Green which includes in its cast Cheyenne Jackson as the partner of a high school teacher wrongly accused of “inappropriate conduct” with a student; Private Romeo which is set on a high school military campus and small groups of boys from rival schools act out the tragedy in real life;  and the dance-filled musical Leave it on the Floor.
