Outfest 2009: A chat with the talent behind “Hollywood, je t’aime” screening Friday night at Ford Ampitheatre

http://www.lafilmfest.com/tixSYS/2009/templates/images/filmstills/5085.jpgI’m really excited that Hollywood, je t’aime will be the Friday night movie at the Ford Ampitheatre because I really liked this movie! I knew I would be interviewing writer-director Jason Bushman when I put the screener in at home several weeks back but did not know that one of my favorite actors, Chad Allen, was in the film.
Chad plays a pot smoking guy who befriends visiting gay Parisian Jerome (Eric Debets) who impulsively books a solo Christmas vacation to Los Angeles and decides to pursue. a dormant desire to become a movie star.
The film screened last month at the LA Film Festival and now gets a second LA showcase at Outfest 2009. I chatted with Bushman, Debets and the film’s producer Charles Herman-Wurmfeld about the movie and the response to it so far.
“People laughed more than I expected to which was awesome because the movie is a comedic drama,” Bushman said of his directorial debut. “The film’s early scenes take place in Paris and were shot over a three-day period in the French capitol. Bushman had some experience in this because he had previously made short film Serene Hunter there in 2006 which also starred Debets who is Parisian.
“I speak French and it was just three days compared to the 21 days we did in LA,” he said. “We finished shooting in LA on February 6 of this year and I was on a plane on February 9 and were shooting on the 19th. It was pretty fast and furious.”
LA Film Festival by you.

There are many references in the film about Debets’ resemblance to Oscar winning actor Adrien Brody but the Frenchman was working an office job instead of pursuing the acting career he dreamed of.

“I wrote the script for him,” Bushman said. “The short film we made together was his first acting role and he was so good. He was getting some great reviews for his acting and it just got me thinking, what would it be like if someone like my friend Eric showed up in Hollywood to become a star. The story is universal. That’s why I came here. Adding the French element gave it some cultural perspective.”

“From the get-go, this project has always been kind of inspired by The Wizard of Oz of all things. In writing the script, I was using the heroes’ journey and it just seemed to make sense that Jerome would come upon three characters who he meets along the way who really kind of impart some knowledge to him: a pot dealer who’s HIV-positive, a jaded-about-Hollywood drag queen (Michael Airington), and a tranny hooker (Diarra Kilpatrick).

Chad Allen’s participation certainly has helped the film’s profile. Said Bushman: “I have been a big fan of Chad’s work forever, especially with his recent film Save Me which just really kind of changed my opinion about him. I was like, ‘Whoa! He’s not just good to look at – he’s really deep. He was the first one we thought of for this role.”

Allen’s supporting role has him appearing in several scenes throughout the moviue but it is the novice actor who is in every single scene.

“It was very fantastic to work with American actors,” said Debets, whose English in the film is far more fluent than what he can speak in real life. “I am proud to be in this movie and to be working with Chad. He’s a good actor and we had a good chemistry. For me, it’s the first feature-length movie and I worked in Hollywood which is the dream.”

Here is the trailer to give you an idea of the finished product:

The movie was finished just before the LA Film Festival and it helped that producer Herman-Wurmfeld has the foresight to get the rough cut to some of the festivals back in March to qualify for festival season. He’s also Bushman’s life partner and director of such films as Kissing Jessica Stein, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde, Fanci’s Persuasion and The Facts of Life Reunion Movie (don’t laugh, I watched it and enjoyed seeing the girls (except for Jo) back together again!).

“This is first producing gig since the mid-90s and he did a stellar job,” Jason said. “I felt so supported.”

I had to know, did working together as director and producer strain their personal relationship or enhance it?

Said Charles: “Well, our relationship is 12 years of time and I think the test actually came before the movie. People ask if we fought while making the movie and my response is, ‘No, we fought before!’ But we got through that.”
