Out singer Sam Smith on his six Grammy nods: “This is outrageously incredible!!!”!

Openly gay artist Sam Smith has become the first male artist in 34 years to receive nominations in the “big four” Grammy Awards categories following the release of a debut album.

His In The Lonely Hour was nominated for Album Of The Year while his smash single Stay With Me was nominated for Record and Song Of The Year and Song of the Year.

He will also compete for Best New Artist as well as Best Pop Vocal Album (In the Lonely Hour) and Best Pop Solo Performance (Stay With Me).

Smith tweeted: ‘4 Grammy Nominations and I haven’t even got out of bed yet – fucking hell.’

Then he received another nod (the nominations were unveiled throughout the day on Friday) and tweeted: ‘5 GRAMMY NOMINATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What is happening??’

Then the sixth nod came and he tweeted: “Thank you to the academy for this. This is outrageously incredible!!!!”

In addition to Smith, the Album of the Year field consists of Beyonce’s self-titled album, Pharrell Williams’ Girl, Beck’s Morning Phase and Ed Sheeran’s X.

For Record of the Year, Smith’s competition is Fancy (Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX),
Chandelier (Sia), Shake It Off (Taylor Swift), and All About That Bass (Meghan Trainor).

In the Song of the Year category, his fellow nominees are Sia, Swift and Trainor for the same songs as the previous category as well as Take Me to Church by Hozier.

Smith competes for Best New Artist with Bastille, Iggy Azalea, Brandy Clark, and Haim.

The 57th Annual GRAMMY Awards telecast will take place live from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 8, 2015.
