Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black to be honored by Lifeworks Mentoring next month

Dustin Lance Black has been getting a lot of awards this year for his superb screenplay for Milk. His heartfelt Oscar speech, reaching out to all the gay kids out there who feel rejected by their family or church, was as inspiring as the film in my opinion.

That’s why he is the perfect choice to be honored by Lifeworks Mentoring, a wonderful organization that does so much to boost the lives of young LGBT people ages 14-24 by pairing them with positive and affirming role models who work tp help them realize their goals and dreams.

Lance will be honored at the 4th Annual Live Out Loud event which is the organizations largest fundraiser. I’ve gone the past three years and it is indeed one of the most fun parties of the year. This year it will be held at the Sunset Gower Studios on Saturday, June 13 from 5-8 p.m.

Said Lance: “We don’t have parents who can personally understand the inspiration, pride, and steely self-worth needed to survive as a sexual minority in this world. We as LGBT people are unique in that we must learn about and be inspired by our minority role models outside of our homes.”

Lifeworks co-=executive director and founder Michael Ferrera is a friend of mine and he said of Lance: “(His) struggle to reconcile faith and family with his sexual orientation is a tale too common while his tremendous resilience and talent leading to the ultimate success in his field winning the Academy Award, is a story too seldom told to our youth. We are proud to honor Lance; his amazing screenplay bringing Harvey Milk’s story to the screen and his groundbreaking acceptance speech aimned at LGBT youth are profound and historic moments in our march to full equality.”

Well said Michael!

Tickets to the event – which always takes place on the Saturday of LA Pride weekend, cost $100 and are available at: www.lifeworksmentoring.org
