Novak Djokovic wins record 5th Australian Open
Had to sleep in after staying up to watch the first and fourth sets of the Australian Open men’s final live. (Okay, I fell asleep during sets two and three). It was high quality stuff with both Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray playing and competing exceptionally well.
Breathtaking rallies and superb shotmaking by both until Andy seemed to run out of gas in the fourth set and lost 7-6(5) 6-7(4) 6-3 6-0.
For Novak, the win greatly enhances his all-time great credentials as it was a record fifth Australian Open title – no man has ever won more since the launch of pro tennis in 1968. Novak had been tied with Roger Federer and Andre Agassi with four.
It is also his eighth overall grand slam title which ties him with Agassi, Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendl on the all-time list. Only Federer (17), Rafael Nadal (14), Pete Sampras (14) and Bjorn Borg (11) have won more majors in pro tennis history.
“I am so privileged and honored to be standing here for a fifth time,” Murray told the crowd after the match.
His next goal will be to win the only major to have eluded him: the French Open.
