Novak Djokovic achieves #1 ranking in men’s tennis for the first time, will play in Wimbledon final on Sunday
NUMBER 1: For the first time since early 2004, someone other than Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal will be ranked number one in men’s tennis.
He’s Novak Djokovic, of course, and he will overtake Nadal when the newest world rankings are released on Monday. The Serbian star achieved this with his 47-1 record this year and by reaching his first Wimbledon final earlier today with a semifinal victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
“It’s hard to express your emotions in a very short time but hopefully some more celebrations are about to come,” said Djokovic, who also beat Tsonga in the 2008 Australian Open final.
Djokovic started the season by winning 41 straight matches, including winning his second Australian Open during that stretch, before losing to Federer in the French Open semifinals.
“I’ve been working all my life for this,” Djokovic said. “I’ve been dreaming about playing the finals of Wimbledon since I started playing tennis when I was 4. To be able to be there on Sunday will probably be the best feeling.”
