Nick Jonas wonders why more straight male singers don’t embrace gay fan base
Nick Jonas has been seemingly everywhere lately – including some gay clubs in NYC.
Too bad one of them wasn’t The Abbey or Mickey’s in West Hollywood – we love him in LA too!
He’s got a new self-titled album to promote and he’s been aggressively targeting his gay fan base.
‘I don’t know why more heterosexual male artists don’t embrace their gay fan base, because it’s so important. At least, I feel like it’s such an important part of my fan base, so I wanted to make an effort and it was incredible to be around my gay fans and celebrate,’ he tells The Advocate.
Last month, Jonas appeared at the gay clubs Up & Down and BPM in Manhattan where he danced and flashed his abs.
‘It was my first time at a gay club, and it was amazing,’ he says. ‘For me it was really about embracing that part of my audience because I know it’s a big part of my audience. The reception from my gay fan base has been incredible.’
Gay people have long been a part of his life.
‘I developed a lot of close gay friends at a very young age when I was performing on Broadway,’ he says. ‘Being around them definitely shaped the way I saw the world and taught me to accept people from all walks of life.
‘I love that this was a part of my upbringing and my exposure to the world.’

It’s awesome that a straight male artist openly embraces his gay fan base. That seemed unheard of even decade ago. I definitely think the young people of today are helping pave the way towards more acceptance.
