NFL’s Dallas Cowboys now officially have a gay player on the team and his name is Michael Sam!

I’ve been nervous enough all day because my car is at the mechanic and I don’t know what the final bill is going to be.

But Michael Sam seems to have had nerves of steal this week as his NFL fortunes have gone up and down then up again in a matter of days.

Michael summed it up best on Wednesday: ‘It’s been a roller coaster this past week.’

He had just passed a physical and was officially signed to the practice squad of the Dallas Cowboys. This came four days after he was cut by the St. Louis Rams and not made a part of their practice squad.

Then, no other NFL team signed Sam during the 24 hours that he was put on waivers and his only remaining hope was that a team would hire him for their practice squad which can be a stepping stone to making the active roster.

It has happened.

‘We felt like it was a good move for our football team right now,’ head coach Jason Garrett tells DallasCowboys.com.

‘We’re bringing a player in we wanted to see on the practice field, and got nothing but good reports about him from our people and the people in St. Louis. We just want to give him a chance to come in and see if he can help our football team.’

For his part, Sam tells the Dallas Morning-News: ‘I’m excited to be to be joining Dallas.

‘I just want to play football, it’s great to be heading back to my home state. … It’s been a roller coaster this past week but I’m happy where I’m at now. … I’m just looking forward to being a Cowboy, my focus is on making the team.’

Sam later posted a series of tweets: ‘As a kid growing up in Texas I always loved the Dallas Cowboys, so to join this incredible organization is really a dream come true. … I look forward to putting my helmet and pads on every day to work my hardest to help bring a sixth Super Bowl Championship to Dallas!!’

Sam made history this year as the first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team and to play in pre-season games.

But Garrett said his sexuality did not play into the decision to sign Sam.

‘This is about football,’ the coach said at a press conference.

‘We evaluated him as a football player and felt like he can help us as a football player. We want to see what he can do. But our attention and focus is on football … that’s the culture we have around here and that’s the culture we’ll continue to have.’

  2. This is great news. It will give me reason to root for the Cowboys.
Best of luck and God bless Michael Sam… way to go.

  3. I wish Sam the best of luck. I’m not a big fan of the Cowboys, but I’ll watch some of the games to see how Michael does.
