New York Mets 2nd baseman Daniel Murphy says he ‘disagrees 100 percent’ with the gay ‘lifestyle’

Well, here we go.

New York Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy says he ‘disagrees 100 percent’ with the gay ‘lifestyle.’

He shared the opinion this week after a visit to training camp by Billy Bean, a former major league pro who came out as gay after his retirement. Bean is now Major League Baseball’s Ambassador for Inclusion.

‘I disagree with his lifestyle,’ Murphy said when asked about Bean’s visit. ‘I do disagree with the fact that Billy is a homosexual.

‘That doesn’t mean I can’t still invest in him and get to know him,’ he added. ‘I don’t think the fact that someone is a homosexual should completely shut the door on investing in them in a relational aspect. Getting to know him. That, I would say, you can still accept them but I do disagree with the lifestyle, 100 percent.’

He attributes his attitude to his Christian beliefs.

‘Maybe, as a Christian, we haven’t been as articulate enough in describing what our actual stance is on homosexuality,’ he explained. ‘We love the people. We disagree [with] the lifestyle. That’s the way I would describe it for me. It’s the same way that there are aspects of my life that I’m trying to surrender to Christ in my own life. There’s a great deal of many things, like my pride.

‘I just think that as a believer trying to articulate it in a way that says just because I disagree with the lifestyle doesn’t mean I’m just never going to speak to Billy Bean every time he walks through the door. That’s not love. That’s not love at all.’

Bean (pictured below) responded to Murphy’s comments in a column for MLB.com.

‘The silver lining in his comments are that he would be open to investing in a relationship with a teammate, even if he “disagrees” with the lifestyle,’ Bean wrote. ‘It may not be perfect, but I do see him making an effort to reconcile his religious beliefs with his interpretation of the word lifestyle.

‘It took me 32 years to fully accept my sexual orientation, so it would be hypocritical of me to not be patient with others.’

  1. Yes, that is like saying that you disagree with black people’s “lifestyle”; it shows your ignorance and prejudice, nothing else. Sadly there are even gay people that use the word “lifestyle” to address the subject, as if there is some mold one instantly is cooked to behave or think once you are attracted to your gender.

Well, at least this kind of not informed/educated people have to admit that there are gays in society and believe it or not, that’s an advance.

Sadly, sportsmen usually aren’t the best educated people you will find, but that is also interesting because when they show some change it means that even certain sectors of society have been reached with new concepts. But there is quite a path ahead.

  2. I think it’s important to remember that people are entitled to believe as they choose, and if Mr Murphy does not agree with the gay lifestyle, that’s his choice. I’m very concerned about the ‘politically correct police’ trying to make everyone conform to one way of thinking, and if they don’t, we ostracize and shun then.

  3. @Steve-what is the gay ‘lifestyle’?

  4. @Steve-Everyone is entitled to an opinion which is true but being gay isn’t anymore a ‘lifestyle’ than being straight. Or lesbian. Or bisexual. Or transgendered. Or African American.

As for as your politically correct police comment-I hear that from a lot of right wingers as an excuse for their bigotry. Total BS.

  5. @Steve-if Mr Murphy had said he didn’t agree with someone’s black lifestyle. Or Jewish lifestyle. Or Latino lifestyle, would you still be defending him? Just curious.

  6. Swell….I don’t ‘believe’ in your imaginary sky fairy, but at least I am Real! I don’t Need you to ‘believe’ in me…I am just Fine without it!
Dick! And Not in the Good way!

    ^^X^^

  7. Lexxvs please stop dragging race into this discussion it’s about homosexuality not jewish people not latino people not black people but homosexuals.

  8. Jacob…. He’s using race as an analogy because people are born gay just like they are born Black, Asian, Hispanic, etc.
No one chooses their sexuality just like straights didn’t choose to be straight. They just are. Murphy also wasn’t born with his prejudice. That was drilled into him likely by a combination of his parents and church, using religion as a weapon against people who are not their clones. Very sad. While society thankfully has evolved, Murphy plays in the nation’s Number 1 market and acts like he lives in the Deep South.

  9. I have always hated the word “lifestyle” for gay people because it indicates choice. There is no choice. You’re either gay or you’re not, and, yes, it’s just that simple. And who really gives a sh*t what Murphy thinks.

  10. FAEN said: “@Steve-if Mr Murphy had said he didn’t agree with someone’s black lifestyle. Or Jewish lifestyle. Or Latino lifestyle, would you still be defending him? Just curious.”

Yes FAEN! The concept of free speech was created to protect UNpopular speech. Don’t confuse my support for free speech to mean I agree with what they say, it means I agree they have a right to say it and hold opinions that differ from mine. I just don’t like this nazi-esque style of ‘speech police’ who are trying to take down everyone who disagrees with them.

  11. Jacob, if simple parallel examples hurt you because they make it easier to see what’s wrong and unfitting with such word (“lifestyle”), it is your problem. In fact there is no better way to defend any minority in a (humanist bent) society than taking precedence in other examples about minority groups, as logically people tend to invisiblize the existence of other groups of people with whatever argument they see convenient out of ignorance or underexposure. Sexuality is varied and there is no more a gay lifestyle than a straight lifestyle (“heterosexual” lifestyle, because may be that’s the word you prefer) in the same that a skin color doesn’t condition what way of life you have (a “lifestyle”), period.

Thus, and as most who are in favor of changes in society regarding LGBT people (“homosexuals” as you may call “them”) I will keep using race and whatever I see fit as a comparison, in the same that already did and will do SCOTUS for that matter for their important rulings you will gladly see and enjoy ahead. Whether you like it or not. I repeat: whether you like it or not. You can concoct any conspiracy theory, any unscientific lie, and any false “naturalistic” approach after that if you want to disregard what most rational people conclude as obvious while comparing a minority to others. When sexuality or color of skin doesn’t matter anymore for real, then there will be no need to bring such comparisons. Keeps your opinion regarding the use of minorities comparisons for your own discourse (whatever that it is), that is what you will have left at least.

  12. Yes, I’d like to know the “gay lifesyle?” as well? It’s not something you pick and choose. An educated person would or should know that Lifestyle is a choice, let’s say, Gothic or Vegan. It’s obvious to me that Murphy is clearly uneducated on this subject. I believe everyone is entitled to their opinions, however, use them properly and know what you are talking about. Gay is not a lifestyle but who you are. Murphy’squotes are laughable at times and I feel almost sorry for him in his attempt(s) in knowing what he thinks he knows.

  13. @Steve-Just as it’s his right to say something mind numbingly ignorant it is also my right to call him on it. That is not nazi-esque in the least.

As for being part of the ‘speech police’ here’s what I have to say. If someone is being homophobic, racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, anti Semetic etc I will always call them on it. That hate has no place in society. Period. If that makes me part of the ‘speech police’ so be it. I’d rather speak up than sit on the side lines.

  14. @Steve-You still haven’t explained what the gay ‘lifestyle’ is.

  15. @Steve-As I suspected, you’re silent when asked to define ‘gay lifestyle. You should probably stop using that offensive inaccurate term.
