Neil Patrick Harris on “Rent” debut at Hollywood Bowl: “Remarkable considering it was the first full run thru with lights”

http://www.latimes.com/media/photo/2010-08/55349190.jpgNeil Patrick Harris is helming a stage production of Rent this weekend.

The How I Met Your Mother star, who starred in an LA production of the musical in the mid-90s, is directing a cast that includes Vanessa Hudgens (pictured with NPH) Aaron Tveit, Wayne Brady, Tracie Thoms and Skylar Astin, among others.

The show runs through Sunday and here’s what NPH had to say, via Twitter, about how things are going: RENT 1st performance last night. Very, very proud. Remarkable, considering it was the first full run thru with lights, orchestra, etc.

He also took to Twitter to comment on this week’s court decision declaring Proposition 8 unconstitutional: Too busy with RENT rehearsals to applaud the decimation of Prop 8? Crikey, I’ve gotta get my priorities in check…

4 Remarks

  1. Most feedback is positive. And I think it is incredibly well done of Neil that he did get to put together the play after just 1 1/2 week rehearsals. – its a big machine. So proud of him.

So there is this with vanessa – some love her and some hate her: I think Neil thought it was important to give her a chance, a opportunity to show what she gat!. He has said many times how difficult it was for him to get roles after doogie – no one would give him a chance – before he did get cast in Rent. So he was give her the same opportunity that someone had give him.

I was so excited for what role David would have ( he did seem so hot and happy in all the videos we have seen from the rehearsals. And it seems like he did a fantastic job. people are saying he was amazing. He play steve, singing the ” will I” and that his voice was beautiful. He look great in all the photos.

Some people forget that this is not on brodway, and can never be done in the same way. This is outdoor, for 17-18 000 people, big big, stage. And you need people who can sell tickets. it’s just the way it is!
So big congratulations to neil & David. fantastic job. Very much good feedback on twitter.

I look forward to the next project you are working together on H & K3:)

  2. I’ve got to say, it’s kinda weird how what seems to be the same one or two (Scandinavian) people with a poor grasp on the English language keep commenting under various different names on a whole bunch of Neil Patrick Harris stories, especially here — the article about the surprise party for David Burtka being the prime example. It’s fairly obvious and just seems kind of obsessive, to be completely honest.

It’s all positive, which I guess is better than haters multiplying themselves, but it’s still weird.

  3. One of the things that makes me miss not living in So Cal anymore that I can’t see this production :(.

  4. Saw it last night. 2 words Nicole Scherzinger!!!! What a terrific performance and such a surprise. She should get the props. Not Vanessa H. who sucked imo.
