Neil Patrick Harris now has THREE Emmy nods! Patrick Harris, already nominated for 2010 Emmys for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series (How I Met Your Mother) and outstanding guest actor in a comedy series (Glee) has belatedly received a third Emmy nomination for hosting last year’s Tony Awards.

Awards expert Tom O’Neil who does the Gold Derby blog for the Los Angeles Times explains why the third nomination comes a little late: Harris’ name was missing from the list of Emmy nominees in the race for best special-class program when bids were unveiled last month. Hosts of award shows used to compete in the old Emmy category of best performance in a variety special (Hugh Jackman won for hosting the Tonys in 2005), but that contest was eliminated last year. Award-show hosts are now grouped with the producers of the kudocasts. If the award show wins best special-class program, then the host wins along with its producers.

Although 2008 host Whoopi Goldberg was included in that year’s nomination and Oscar hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin are included in the Emmy nod for the Academy Awards, NPH’s name was ommitted.

Writes O’Neil: All because someone in the office of the Tonycast producers forgot to include Harris’ name on the Emmy paperwork? Presumably, that’s what happened. For the last several days, Gold Derby has been bugging the Tonys and Harris’ PR rep for comment about the slight, which apparently triggered some action behind the scenes. We’ve just been informed that Harris’ name has now officially been added to the current Emmy ballot in the special-class category.

NPH had previously been nominated three times for his role as womanizing Barney Stinson on HIMYM. His odds of finally winning an Emmy are triple this year!
