Neil Patrick Harris loses at Grammys for “Hedwig” but at least he got to meet Madonna

Neil Patrick Harris, already the winner of a Tony Award and four Emmys, missed out on adding a Grammy to his major showbiz honors on Sunday.

Nominated in the Best Cast Recording category for Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Harris lost to the cast album for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

Doing red carpet interviews with husband David Burtka, Harris broke news of the loss on live TV while chatting with Entertainment Tonight: ‘We just found out we didn’t win. The amazing musical Beautiful did. So I hate Carole King.’

Had Harris won, he would have been three-quarters of his way to becoming an EGOT, an exclusive showbiz club of people who have won the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.

It was the first Grammy nod for Harris who has never been nominated for an Oscar but is hosting the awards in two weeks.

Harris’ disappointment over losing quickly evaporated when he realized Madonna was standing behind him on the red carpet.

Afraid ‘I’ll be tased by her security’ if he were to go and say hello, an Entertainment Tonight reporter called the Material Girl over to the interview area and made an introduction.

Madonna gave Harris a kiss on the cheek and he and Burtka left the interview area smiling broadly.
