NBC stops production of “Sean Saves the World”
NBC has stopped production of the Sean Hayes sitcom Sean Saves the World after just 12 episodes have aired.
This makes me sad as I had watched every episode, truly enjoyed them, and felt like the show was really hitting its stride.
Sean sent out a tweet tonight thanking NBC for a ‘wonderful opportunity’ as well as the show’s cast and crew which included the great Linda Lavin as his mother and delicious Megan Hilty as his best friend.
‘Looking forward to Obama’s minimum wage increase to $10/hr,’ Sean tweeted.
Megan also took to Twitter and wrote: ‘Thanks for all the kind words about the cancellation of #SSTW. I’m a lucky lady to have gotten to work with such an incredible cast & crew!’
NBC has not made an official announcement on the fate of the series. But network chairman Bob Greenblatt acknowledged to us last week during the TV Critics Association press tour that the show and the rest of the network’s Thursday night comedy line-up is struggling badly in the ratings.
The network had ordered 18 episodes of the show and 14 had been completed. That means there are two completed episodes that have not aired and it’s not clear if and when they will.
In his first sitcom since Will & Grace left the air in 2008, Sean played a gay man juggling raising a teenaged daughter with his demanding job and dealing with an outspoken mother.
He told me before the show’s premiere last fall: ‘Who knows if it’s the right time or not. Time will tell if it’s a hit or if it fails or whatever. You never know.’

Not a surprise. Every time I watched it all I could see was ‘Just Jack’. I half expected Karen to come through the door. My best to you Sean on your new projects.
Danny says:
Seriously??? I luv this show. I can’t stand those one camera “dramedy” shows. I need a laugh track. Luckily, I still have some Designing Woment on my TiVO. Good luck Sean….will miss you and Megan and Linda!!
RichB says:
Sorry the show has been cancelled but Sean, other cast members, and writing just did not match. I appreciate Sean’s other known projects to date, especially Grimm and Hollywood Game Night. Agree with above comment, Karen should have a key to his apartment.
John says:
Agree with Rich B but also wish to add the character of Sean’s boss continually reminded me of a broad caricature of Adolph Hitler complete with heavy Nazi accent. Very off putting for a comedy. The fault of the writers not Sean.
Vince says:
NBC always pull the gun to quickly. Good show but too many other shows on at same time. Why didn’t they try another day? Maybe another network will pick it up.
James says:
It wasn’t very good.
