National Board of Review Awards: Christopher Plummer wins for “Beginners” while “Pariah” wins Freedom of Expression prize
Christopher Plummer was named best supporting actor by The National Board of Review today for his role as a gay man who comes out late in life in the drama Beginners.
The film, which also stars Ewan McGregor, was also named one of the year’s top 10 Independent Films by the group which is comprised of more than 100 academics, students, film enthusiasts and professionals who consider some 250 films in a broad range of categories to determine the honorees.
The board’s Freedom of Expression prize went to Pariah, the drama about a 17-year-old African-American woman with a flair for poetry who is quietly but firmly embracing her identity as a lesbian.

Best Adapted Screenplay: Alexander Payne and Nat Faxon & Jim Rash, “The Descendants”
