NAACP Image Awards: Wanda Sykes, Lee Daniels and Rosie O’Donnell are among the LGBT-related nominees
Wanda Sykes was not only one of the celebrities announcing the nominations for the 41st annual NAACP Image Awards in Beverly Hills on Wednesday morning – she ended up being a double nominee herself.
Sykes’ new late night talk show on Fox was nominated as was her HBO comedy special. She did not, however, get a nod for her work on the CBS sitcom New Adventures of Old Christine.
It had to be a very satisfying morning for out director Lee Daniels who was nominated for outstanding film director for his movie Precious: Based on the novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.
Precious was also nominated in the outstanding motion picture and outstanding independent motion picture categories and earned acting nods for Gabourey Sidibe, Mo’Nique, Lenny Kravitz, Paula Patton, and Mariah Carey.
Nominated in the outstanding director on a TV drama series was out director Paris Barclay who earned a nod for the Coup de Grace episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
And finally, there is Rosie O’Donnell.
The outspoken star has become so well-known for her old talk show, her stormy year on The View, her new radio show, her cruises and her books that sometimes we forget that Rosie is also a really fine actress who has shined in many films including A League of Our Own and Sleepless in Seattle and was an absolute hoot in her recurring role as Dawn Budge on Nip/Tuck.
Rosie will compete in the outstanding actress in a TV movie category for her performance in America. Her competition includes her co-star, the legendary Ruby Dee.
In America, Rosie plays a therapist who helps a 17-year-old boy, who has grown up in the U.S. foster care system and has attempted suicide, deal with his troubled past. The movie is based on E.R. Frank’s book of the same name.
