My parking lot encounter with birthday boy Kiefer Sutherland who turns 54 today

I know, I know. That’s a provocative headline but I’ve got to get your attention somehow, right? Kenneth in the 212 can’t get all the eyeballs all the time!

So today is the 54th birthday of my forever crush Kiefer Sutherland, who after success with such films as became Young Guns, Flatliners, and The Vanishing, became the Emmy-winning star of 24. His most recent series was Designated Survivor.

Okay, my parking lot story:

The year is 2003 I believe but it’s not out of the question that it might be 2004. I had attended the DGA Awards at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Century City and Kiefer had been one of the presenters.

I remember thinking what a great voice he has for this kind of occasion – I could just listen to it all night.

So when I was waiting for my car at the valet, I found myself standing right next to Kiefer who was by himself. I always invited a guest to the DGA thing but can’t remember for the life of me who I took that year or where they were at this moment.

Anyway, I blurted out to Kiefer: “I just love your voice!”

OMG.

But, he did not mind one bit!

He was very friendly, asked me my name, and we gabbed awhile about the winners that night and someone (maybe my guest?) snapped this photo of us.

Kiefer’s car arrived first and he said goodbye.

I had to squelch the urge to say: “Call me.”
