My interview with Ty Herndon …

It was about 20 years ago that I first saw a photo of Ty Herndon and was instantly smitten.

He faded from the limelight pretty quickly but I never forgot him and even bought a discount CD of his at Tower Records just because I liked the cover. Not sure if I ever played it.

Now we know why Ty had gone away – he was struggling with his sexuality, had two stints in drug and alcohol rehab, money problems and marriage and divorce from two women.

Nearly four months ago, Ty came out publicly and he has never been happier.

‘I get to finally sing about every bit of my life – I don’t have to pretend,’ he told me at the recent Family Equality Council dinner. ‘I don’t have to replace the he’s with she’s in the lyrics.’

I remember the first time I heard “What Matters Most”, I was blown away. When Ty sang, “Oh my God, what did I do?” it broke my heart. And then I saw him. He was and is so good-looking. When I read about the thing in Texas, part of me was happy (yes, he’s gay!) and another part of me was horrified (oh shit, what’s going to happen to his career?). I’m glad he survived that, and I’m glad he’s still surviving. He’s got a wonderful voice, a remarkable talent, and yes, he’s still cute as shit, and I’m glad he’s finding his chance to be happy. We all deserve a chance to find our happiness. 🙂

Wish you the very best, Ty. You deserve it!

Sports, religion and country music seem to be the last holdouts when it comes to LGBT issues. Good to see some change coming.

I love Ty Herndon’s style. Just read your GSN article. Sounds like he went through quite a bit to get to where he is today. Glad he made it.
