My chat with Josh Thomas, the creator, star and co-writer of the comedy-drama “Please Like Me”
I am mad about the comedy-drama series Please Like Me which airs on Pivot TV and was thrilled to meet and chat with the show’s very talented star Josh Thomas at a recent event.
Josh told me that his TV alter-ego, also named Josh, is ‘exactly like me.’
‘We’re exactly the same but he has like a lot more to deal with than I do and he doesn’t have a television show,’ he says.
Well, there are a few differences: ‘He’s more witty and thinks things through better than I do. I have to like sit down and write it. Otherwise it’s very similar.’
Thomas, 28, not only stars in the show, he also created it and co-writes the episodes of the series which premiered in February 2013 in Australia on ABC2 was soon acquired by Participant Media’s television network Pivot for airing in the US.
The critically-acclaimed show is an honest depiction of the lives of twentysomethings and tackles such subjects as attempted suicide, depression, coming out and heartbreak.
But always with a humorous tone and always with plenty of heart.
The first season was six episodes and based on Thomas’ stand-up comedy shows. The second and third seasons have been 10 episodes each.
‘We do have a season three and that is surprising,’ Thomas says. ‘When anyone watches it I’m always shocked, when somebody like turns it on. I don’t ever expect that. It’s always thrilling.’
Will there be a fourth season?
‘I don’t know what’s happening with a season four,’ he says. ‘We’re going to do some writing and decide if it’s a good idea. (The network) would have to agree as well.’

I love this show so much. It’s so relevant and realistic in so many ways, and I’m really loving the current season, which has a very feminist feel to it. And it’s hilarious. I’m so glad it’s still on the air (for now) and glad that Pivot picked it up in the US (Pivot’s a really great channel in a lot of other ways too!). Very cool that you had a chance to meet Josh Thomas.
