My chat w/Ian Gomez of “Cougar Town”

I just love this photo of Ian Gomez that’s on Wikipedia because that’s my hand and tape recorder in it!

Anyway, I interviewed the actor, currently co-starring on ABC’s Cougar Town, for Fancast.com and wanted to share a little bit of that piece with you.

Ian, who is married to Nia Vardalos, also played Javier on Felicity – a gay character who was tight with Felicity, Ben, Noel and the rest of the gang on the show.

I wondered if he was afraid of being typecast after the show ended because of his character’s sexuality which was played very broadly with a thick Spanish accent.

“There were a lot of auditions for the same character, just with a different name,” he said. “I didn’t really sweat it. I always kind of had the feeling that I’m a character actor and I’ll always work. I don’t need to be a tremendous star, I just want to be a working actor. I usually get cast as the best friend or the neighbor. I guess that’s where my bread and butter will be.

I forgot to ask Ian what he thought when Felicity (Kerri Russell) gut her famous curly hair off at the start of season 2 but I did remember to ask him the really important question: would Javier have picked Ben (Scott Speedman) or Noel (Scott Foley). God knows Felicity had a hard time choosing and who could blame her!

“I’d have to say Ben,” Ian said. “He was the moody, sexy guy and Noel was more the safe person, the cute boy next door. Ben was a lot more dangerous and I think that was more appealing to some people. But you could start a fistfight over this question of Ben or Noel.”
