MSNBC Video: Businesses, LGBT activists react to Arizona governor’s veto of anti-gay bill

Very interesting situation in Arizona tonight as Governor Jan Brewer vetoed SB 1062 which would have made it legal for any business to discriminate against gay people based on religious reasons.

The so-called ‘turn away the gays’ bill was passed by both houses of the Republican-controlled legislature. But the pressure on Brewer to veto was immense and striking.

This thing failed because the attention of the country was focused on it.

Airlines, major companies, business leaders and even famously conservative politicians including John McCain and Mitt Romney urged a veto. Even three Republican state senators who voted for the bill changed their mind publicly.

I watched Brewer’s press conference earlier this evening and wrote about it over at Gay Star News.

There was a good segment on MSNBC with screenwriter and LGBT Activist Dustin Lance Black, AZ’s only gay State Rep., Demion Clinco and the Policy Director for AZ employer Yelp.

One Remark

  1. I never doubted Gov Brewer would veto the bill but let’s be clear as to why. It wasn’t because she believed the bill was wrong on its merits and would hurt GLBT Arizonans, but rather because it would interfere with the flow of money. And as we know, money is the GOTP’s real god. The motive for everything.
