Rock Hudson–
I did not follow his career closely.
I loved him in McMillian and Wife. Yes, I am old. I also saw him on Dynasty. I have seen bits and pieces of his movies here and there.
I do remember being in the military-Weisbaden, Germany-medic-and seeing Rock on television and he looked terrible from a medical standpoint. HIV/AIDS was surging and I just came from the US where I heard very little to Germany where HIV/AIDS prevention campaigns were everywhere. It was also the time the military started testing for HIV. A few of my close friends tested positive.
Can you imagine living in Rock’s time where being found gay was the loss of friends, employment, jail time, being thrown in a mental institution, shock therapy… The pressure o keeping all the plates spinning could be overwhelming. I read stories that Rock’s image was indeed manufactured and at home behind closed doors, he was a “queen.” Loved to laugh, have fun, and entertain his friends-men and women. He seemed to have the game down pat. Hats off to all those gay men and women who came before me and paved the way to a better acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community today.
