Watch the great synopsis of the MASH episode in the YouTube video at the bottom of the article. This brings back so many memories.
I was 18 in 1975. I served in the US Air Force-Medic-from 1984-1989. I know about the witchhunts, entrapments, and discharges from the military. When I was in, for the most part, folks did not care if you were gay. Well, I was in the medical field and to many, it was not really considered truly military. We acted like we were in a civilian hospital because when you were a patient your rank was left at the door. You were a patient. I was investigated once for being gay because I knew a secret of an officer who was sleeping with officer students. That was not tolerated at any rank. To make a long story short, I had to call their bluff and things were quietly tucked away. What was comforting was many fellow soldiers pulled me aside and stated they were in my corner. I had just gotten out and marched in the streets of Dallas when Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell was enacted. It was a compromise because the military was not ready to fully let go of their homophobia.
Let me suggest a good book that addresses the Lavendar scare, MacCarthy’s witchhunts for gays-remember the fear of communism was rampant-because in his mind the association of gays and communism was absolute. The book details the fear, and absurdity compared to today’s sensibilities-of folks being gay. And truth be told this fear was mainly gay men. The book-Secret City-James Kirchick.
Have a great Labour Day weekend all.
