Morning Man Classic: Lew Hoad!
With the US Open just a week away, I’ve got tennis on the brain – even more than usual.
Today’s male players are certainly attractive starting with the top three Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, but there’s hasn’t been a real blond bombshell grand slam champion since Stefan Edberg.
Today’s Morning Man Classic was a pre-Edberg blond bombshell named Lew Hoad, a hunky Australian who won four grand slam singles titles and 8 grand slam doubles crowns in the 50s.
Admired for his attacking play, in 1956 he came close to completing the Grand Slam, but was defeated in the United States final by countryman Ken Rosewall.
In those days, top players who wanted to make any kind of money at all joined the pro tour which barred them from the grand slam tournaments. So, who knows how many more big titles Hoad could have won.
He died in 1994 at the age of 59.

Richard Bortness says:
Certainly one of the best comments I have read, “… a quintessential Aussie: good-natured but laconic, a man’s man, and a friendly host to the thousands of fans and friends …”
