‘Moonlight’ adds $2.5 million to its box office gross
I saw Moonlight for the second time on Friday night at the Outfest Fusion LGBT People of Color Film Festival in Hollywood. I highly recommend repeat viewings of this movie. It was such a richer, deeper experience for my the second time and it was so important to see it again on the big screen. But Fusion was not the only place to see the 2017 Academy Award winner for Best Picture. Moonlight’s distributor, A24, added 979 screens to give the film its widest release to date of 1,564 screens. It added $2.5 million to its gross for a total of $25.4 million at the US box office to date. That’s not a huge figure compared to the grosses of La La Land ($145.7 million) or Hidden Figures ($158.8 million) but it’s stupendous when you consider Moonlight had a production budget of $1.5 million. Moonlight also became available on demand so you can see it at home but trust me, the big screen is the way you want to go.
