“Mid-Century Modern” sitcom has been cancelled by Hulu after one 10-episode season

I loved the Hulu sitcom Mid-Century Modern so am very bummed out that it has been cancelled after just one season.

Series creator Max Mutchnick announced the cancellation Monday on Instagram: “Ten great episodes… Not enough, But we loved making every single one of them. We’re gonna miss our very special show. Thanks to everyone who watched.”

The sitcom starred Nathan Lane whose character, Bunny, invites his two best friends — Matt Bomer as flight attendant Jerry and Nathan Lee Graham as fashion snob Arthur — to live with him in Palm Springs, following the sudden death of their fourth friend. They’re all sharing the home with Bunny’s opinionated mother Sybil, played Linda Lavin.

I went to the taping of an episode last November and we loved it – especially the great Miss Lavin. She appeared to be in great health so it was a shock when she died suddenly the next month. She had taped eight of the 10 episodes.

2 Remarks

  1. Did anybody really think this show would be picked up? Hope they put some of their check away in a rainy dsy fund cuz this bitch was a deluge.

  2. Honestly, Greg… I’m not surprised. I so wanted it to have legs, but it just didn’t for my taste. I think it was not nearly progressive enough and quite frankly, was out of step with the times. Maybe I missed the point and the title said it all: Mid-Century Modern? Was it supposed to be some homage to a time and days gone by? It felt like a very mediocre period piece. The concept, the idea, and the execution, all felt lazy… In this day and age: ONE friend of color??? Ridiculous and a bit revolting. It leaned too heavily on tropes that were already exhausted after the 1st couple of seasons of the original Will and Grace. It showed up tired. Where was the truly brilliant WIT?? I loved Linda Lavin- always have. The guys unfortunately were written in such an archaic and predictable way that it wasn’t enough for that talented cast to find something new in. The show felt like it had already fallen into a rhythm of a sitcom that had been on air several seasons past it’s prime- from episode ONE. There was something already quite STALE about it. I even thought that maybe this was a show that had been caught in development hell for over 20 years and someone finally gave it its shot. It just felt dated from day one- very paint by numbers. Having said that, I had hoped that a 2nd season would have been an opportunity to see the show “right itself” and find it’s way. Being on Hulu, gave it so much opportunity for freedom. In light of that, it seemed too safe. Maybe I’ve seen too many reruns of “Vicious” and missed the furiously fast fangs. Truth be told, love or hate Nathan Lane, he is no Sir Derek Jacobi. Sigh…
