Meryl Streep feted in Washington DC over weekend

While she seems a shoo-in to receive a record 17th Oscar nomination next month for her performance as
Margaret Thatcher in
The Iron Lady,
Meryl Streep is already getting some major honors this awards season.
One of the biggest came this weekend when she was one the five people recognized at Sunday’s 34th Annual Kennedy Center Honors. Among Miss Streep’s former co-stars on hand to pay tribute were Robert De Niro, Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway, Kevin Kline and Stanley Tucci.
President Barack Obama had already paid tribute to the legendary actress at a White House ceremony: “Meryl Streep was once described as a cross between a den-mother and a class cutup. I don’t know who that was,” he said, laughter cutting him off. “Today, she’s the most nominated actress in the history of the Academy Awards. She’s tossed aside more than a few stereotypes along the way. Each of her roles is different, and different from what we expect Meryl Streep to be.”
Miss Streep told the Associated Press: “It’s overwhelming. I feel very proud.”
